And while I know the 70's had the originals and the 80's saw the heyday of the slasher, I came of age watching the 90's ones. It's one of my favorite subgenres of horror. If you like 90s teen slashers then this is right up your street! I cannot recommend this enough to lovers of the slasher genre. Virgin Night is a new favourite of mine and quite honestly one of the best books I have ever read. Can Michael, Caleb and Vincent free Cherry Lake from the curse or are they in over their heads? However, other forces are at play and have their own plans for Virgin Night. One that has taken many lives over the years. Three friends decide to finally put a stop to Virgin Night and the entity that comes with it.

The residents of Cherry Lake fear a certain night because of this: Virgin Night. The investment I had in the characters (okay, I’ll call it an attachment because I did get very attached) made me fall in love with them-especially a certain character called Caleb.Ī curse has haunted Cherry Lake for decades. It’s clear to see how much thought went into crafting such a story. When I started Virgin Night, my expectations in what the story would be were constantly challenged. If it was a movie, I would have rented it multiple times from the video store.Ĭhristopher Robertson executes-and masters-a style of prose that makes you feel like you are part of a horror movie with highly developed characters, plot and backstory. This book isn’t just a book, but a cinematic 90s slasher experience. To say I “read” Virgin Night wouldn’t do the story justice. Virgin Night by Christopher Robertson releases Feb 1st! Definitely recommend picking this one up if you love Slashers, dick jokes, and all around great storytelling. It was an absolute blast reading it and I am super stoked to check out more of Robertson’s work.

The big part of this that made it so perfect to me is that Robertson took the classic slasher and put such a different vibe to it, thats all Ill say with no spoilers. The stories of these characters and why they are who they are is so deep and well built. The character dynamic was incredibly natural, as you can feel the bond between these people. Christopher Robertson really displays his writing skill by being able to break up intense and brutal scenes with quips, puns, and just straight-up teenage antics that somehow don't feel out of place or forced. Reminds me of chilling at FamilyVideo while my girlfriend restocks the shelves and I'm looking at the sick “straight to VHS/DVD” horror section.

It captures the perfect blend of the classic slasher and the 90s teen movie immature humor (if that's what you want to call it). As a 90s kid, this book is a huge blast of nostalgia.
